We published a groundbreaking study titled «Towards Mass Production of Graphene-Reinforced Inconel 718 by Powder Injection Moulding», shedding light on the potential of Powder Injection Moulding (PIM) for revolutionizing the fabrication of advanced materials. This innovative research demonstrates the feasibility of using PIM to economically produce intricate components of Inconel 718 superalloy enhanced with reduced graphene oxide (rGO).
The study reveals that PIM, a cost-effective manufacturing method, can incorporate rGO directly into the superalloy powder through an organic binder, eliminating the need for additional dispersion processes. Using advanced characterization techniques, we confirmed the presence of graphenic species throughout the production stages, despite partial degradation during sintering due to reactions with matrix elements.
This pioneering work not only highlights the potential for graphene-reinforced superalloys but also opens the door to extending PIM to other metal alloys and ceramics, promising transformative applications across engineering industries.
Published in June 2024, this research sets the stage for further exploration, paving the way for industrial-scale production of high-performance materials. Check this article with the following link: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rineng.2024.102233
